It is customary for young Amish people to complete a “rumspringa” — Pennsylvania Dutch for “run-around”. Teenagers, when they reach a certain age, leave the Amish culture and experience modern society — music, technology, sex, drugs — for a period of time in order to solidify their faith in the Amish community. Some, when exposed to another way of living, choose to abandon their roots and join the modern world instead of returning and becoming baptized. This ABC exposé of seven Amish teens in Ashland, Ohio thoroughly documents the adolescent-life crisis of “going about”.
